Why Instagram Shows “Made with AI” on Your Photo
Instagram and related apps can label photos from embedded AI metadata such as C2PA, EXIF, and XMP. Here’s why it happens and how to clean files before posting.
Labels often start in the file, not the feed
When a photo shows “Made with AI” or similar UI, the platform may be reading provenance metadata left by editors and exporters. Photoshop Generative Fill, Firefly, Lightroom, and other tools commonly write C2PA, XMP, or EXIF software fields. For the underlying format, see C2PA remover: how to remove C2PA.
A small touch-up can still leave those signals even when most of the image is a real photograph.
Common metadata signals
Apps look for removable machine-readable fields such as:
- C2PA / Content Credentials manifests
- XMP records that mention generative or AI workflows
- EXIF Software / description fields from AI-capable editors
Clean the file before you post
